History: .45 caliber ammo was developed by John Browning to use in his prototype semi-automatic pistol. Eventually .45 caliber ammo became more widely used when the United States army began issuing M1911 pistols in 1911. During the Philippine-American War, the US Cavalry reported that even the .38 long Colt was significantly less effective against the Moro Rebellion. Because of this, the US cavalry determined that .45 was the minimum they would carry in handguns. They did note that in order for their soldiers to be effective with .45 caliber ammo, it was critical that they trained to ensure they were able to hit a vulnerable part of the enemies’ body. The result from Colt was the Model 1905, sporting the requested .45 caliber ammo. After a series of improved designs, the US Military eventually adopted the Model 1911 and the military felt they had a superior handgun that featured the “man stopping” power possessed by .45 caliber ammo. .45 caliber ammo combines accuracy and stopping power with relatively low flash, muzzle blast and moderate recoil.
